Steyn Nelson Vintage Port 2010

Fortified Port Style from New Zealand - Nelson
Review Date : 01-Jul-2017
Deepish garnet-hued red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The bouquet is very finely proportioned with intense, rich and pure aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with dark plums, along with subtle notes of fresh herbs entwined with cassis liqueur, raisins, caramel and nutty elements. The spirit clean and fine, matched and balanced to the fruit intensity. Sweet to taste and fullish bodied, the palate is elegantly presented with a finely concentrated core of ripe blackberry and plum fruit intermingling with an amalgam of dark herbs, raisins, caramel and nuts. The fruit richness and sweetness lend the mouthfeel smoothness and a degree of unctuousness, and this is balanced by fine, cutting spirit, light extraction and grip, and subtle acidity. The wine has good power nd drive, and carries to an elegant, lingering finish of black fruits, herbs, raisins and caramel with nutty suggestions. This is an elegantly rich, well-balanced LBV or Vintage Port style with ripe fruit along with a herb piquancy, and raisin, caramel and nutty notes, on a palate with refined spirit and textures. Serve with caramel and chocolate desserts, and with blue cheeses over the next 10-12+ years.. Made from 100% Touriga Nacional, vines planted in 2007, fortified with double distilled brandy made from Chenin Blanc and Pinot Gris grown on the Steyn vineyard to 18.3% alc. and 96 g/L RS., the wine settled 12 months in tank and matured for 8 years in seasoned 300 L barrels. 18.5/20 Jul 2017 RRP $37.95 TBC
