Very full, dark, black-red colour with some purple hues. The nose is concentrated and elegantly presented with aromas of black fruits and dark herbs, unfolding savoury black pepper and leathery notes. This has a perfumed lift with florals, spices and oak toast elements that emerge, adding detail. Medium-full bodied, the flavours are initially shy and tightly bound, but open out and build in richness and breadth to become rich and succulent with a concentrated core of dark berry and black pepper fruit flavours. Earthy spices, herb notes, and dark red florals blossom on mid-palate, with bright acidity enlivening the mouthfeel and adding to the sweetness of the fruit. The flavours are carried by supple, fine-grained tannins leading to a sustained finish marked by black pepper and toasty oak. This is an elegant and fine-grained, aromatic, black-fruited Syrah with spices and toasty oak interest. Serve with casseroles, and grilled or roasted red meats over the next 5-6 years. Clones 470, Chave and the ‘Old’ clone, hand-picked, given a cold soak and fermented with approx. 25% whole berries to 14.0% alc. The wine spent 30-40 days on skins and was aged 20 months in 40% new French oak barriques. 18.0+/20 Mar 2013 RRP $44.95
