Squawking Magpie ‘SQM’ Gimblett Gravels Cabernets/Merlot 2013

Blended Red from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 18-Oct-2015
A barrel selection wine, being a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 22 months in 37.5% new French oak. Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is full, ich and plush with aromas of very ripe blackcurrant and cassis fruit along with blackberries, black plums and lifted, exotic oak. Some dusty, toasty complexities unfold. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich and plush, sweetly succulent fruit flavours of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, layered with spices, exotic oak and nuances of iron-earth and black ink. There is considerable extraction and grip, the tannins very powdery and fine-grained, balancing the fruit sweetness. The mouthfeel is bright, vibrant and showing energy and drive, leading to a very long and sustained finish of opulent fruit and oak notes. This is a very full, rich and plush Cabernet/Merlot blend with sweetly ripe fruit, exotic oak and plenty of fine structure. Match with rich game meat dishes over the next 10-12+ years. 19.5/20 Oct 2015 RRP $79.00 A barrel selection wines, being a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 22 months in 37.5% new French oak. Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and firmly concentrated with a tight core of ripe blackcurrant fruit, along with cassis essence, black ink and minerals. Iron-earth, spices and black florals provide lift and the aromatics unfold pencil shavings and cedary oak elements. Fullish-bodied, the palate features considerable structure, with fully-extracted, fine-grained, powdery tannins encasing the ripe blackcurrant and cassis-like fruit. Plums, iron-earth, minerals and spices unfold along with pencilly oak. The structure carries the wine, with the fruit richness balancing the tannins. The mouthfeel is one of fine-textures with a soft but significant grip and ripe acid which leads to a very long finish. This is a ripe, intense cassis fruited Cabernet-based blend with considerable fine-grained structure and extract, and soft textures and acidity. Match with roasted lamb and beef over the next 10-15 years. 2,576 bottles made. 19.5-/20 Jul 2015 RRP $79.00
