Squawking Magpie Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2010

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 08-Mar-2013
Mostly Mendoza with clone 15, planted in 1994, plus clone 95 fruit planted in 2007, fully-barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in 25% new French oak barrels, with approx. 50% undergoing MLF. Bright straw-yellow colour with green-gold hues, paler on edge. This has a powerful and intense bouquet, with elegance of proportion, quite sleek, with penetrating aromas of ripe citrus fruits harmoniously infused with oak toast, creamy MLF, nutty barrel-ferment layers and smoke. Medium-full bodied, concentrated and intense flavours of ripe citrus fruit melded with toasty oak, butterscotch and nuts flow smoothly and near-seamlessly across the palate. Creamy barrel-ferment textures are given drive and energy by lovely, lacy acidity and very fine textures. The balance of fruit sweetness, creaminess, acidity and phenolics is a feature, which leads to a very long and sustained finish with bold citrus and toasty flavours. This is an intensely flavoured Chardonnay with citrusy fruit and toasty oak that has seamless power. Serve with roasted or grilled seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 5+ years. 19.0-/20 Mar 2013 RRP $33.95
