Spy Valley Marlborough Merlot/Malbec 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 21-Jan-2015
76% Merlot and 24% Malbec from the ‘Johnson Estate G’ and ‘Lodge’ blocks, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 25% new French oak. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with a youthful purple rim. This has a concentrated and firm nose of primary black berry and plum aromas, along with subtle herbal and curranty notes and some inkiness. The aromatics are fruit-focussed and intense. Medium-full bodied, the palate is tightly packed and well-proportioned with vibrant and lively blackberry and dark plum fruit flavours. The fruit is juicy and lush, unveiling dark, fresh herb and blackcurranty elements. The fruit is supported by fine, firm tannin extraction and zesty, youthful acidity which leads to a long, sustained finish with sweet black fruit flavours. This is a finely concentrated, grainy-textured Merlot and Malbec blend with lively primary black fruits. Match with barbecued and roasted red meats over the next 5-6 years. 17.5+/20 Jan 2015 RRP $25.00
