Spy Valley ‘Envoy’ Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 06-Jan-2014
Bright, even straw-yellow colour with light, green-gold hues. The bouquet is softly aromatic with a beautiful juxtaposition of delicate white and yellow stonefruits with honeysuckle, beside fresh mineral and steely notes, combining richness and freshness. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-full bodied, bright, lively fruit flavours of stonefruits meld with ripe pears and honey. The palate builds in richness and lusciousness, becoming softly rounded and unctuous. This has good power and drive, and the flavours flow smoothly along a creamy, integrated line, with restrained acidity providing sufficient energy and freshness. The palate leads to a soft-textured and plush finish with excellent presence. This is a lush, near unctuous, rich, medium-sweet Pinot Gris with ripe fruit and balancing freshness. Serve with mildly spicy Middle Eastern fare over the next 4+ years. Fruit from original plantings on the ‘C Block’ of Johnson Estate, hand-picked on first signs of raisining, and fermented in small oak foudres to 13.5% alc. and 29 g/L RS, the wine aged 6 months on lees. 19.0-/20 Jan 2014 RRP $32.00
