Spade Oak The Prospect Ormond Pinot Gris 2019, Gisborne

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Gisborn
Review Date : 01-Sep-2020
Bright, medium straw-yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is softly full with generous aromas of sweet pear, marzipan, melded with some citrus zest, savoury herbs and warm nuts from barrel fermentation. Medium-bodied, off-dry to taste, sweet pear with light honey and lemon, interweaved with marzipan, herbs, savoury elements, lingers with flint, warm spiced nuts to a dry finish. The oily mouthfeel is light and elegant, smooth-flowing on a light phenolic texture line and lively acidity. The fruit has good concentration, integrated with the barrel-fermented characters with elegancy and poise, lingers to linearity. This is a well-crafted Pinot Gris with flavours of sweet pear and marzipan, as well as complexing barrel-fermented characters on a harmonious oily texture line and lingering dry finish. Match with prawn and chicken summer rolls and Japanese Oden over the next 3-5 years. Fruit from Ashwood Vineyard clones M2 and 458. Destemmed, pressed to 4-year-old barrel-fermented 40% and tank, fermented to 13.5% alc, 6 g/l RS. 8 months lees contact. 18.5/20 pts Sept 2020 RRP $28
