SOHO ‘Valentina’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 29-Jan-2013
100% Syrah from the ‘Jomara' vineyard, hand-picked and fermented to 12.6% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Full, moderately dark ruby-red colour with some purple hues on rim. This has an elegant and tightly bound nose with concentrated aromas of black fruits and an intriguingly attractive perfumed amalagam of dark florals, game meat and bacony oak. Medium-bodied, savoury black berry fruits, Asian spices, charry oak and violetty elements form a packed and integrated core and a palate with good presence. Soft, supple tannins and fine acidity support the fruit, forming a smooth, flowing mouthfeel. Some nuances of fresh herbs and black pepper emerge and along with sweet, luscious fruit carry through to a long, crisp and lacy finish with balanced and refined tannin line. This is an elegant, concentrated and supple Syrah featuring aromatic black fruits and oak char interest. Match with roasted and grilled red meat over the next 4-5+ years. 17.5+/20 Jan 2013 RRP $43.99
