Smoking Loon California Old Vine Zinfandel 2014

Zinfandel from USA
Review Date : 15-Apr-2016
A blend of 91% Zinfandel, 6% Barbera and 3% Petite Sirah, mainly from Lodi, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 80% new oak, of which 80% was American with 10% each Hungarian and French. Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, lighter edged and youthful in appearance. The nose is finely proportioned, and initially a little shy, showing lifted dark raspberry and blueberry fruit. The aromas are fresh and vibrant, revealing dark herbs and reductive minerally elements, unfolding some pepper and nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are upfront and vibrant, providing a lively and juicy mouthfeel. Liquorice, plums spices and pepper detail add interest. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, lending a degree of tension and energy. The wine carries to a long, lingering, tight cored finish of ripe blackberry and plummy fruits. This is a bright, vibrant and juicy Zinfandel with raspberry and liquorice flavours and a lively, palate with fine grip. Match with Middle Eastern lamb dishes over the next 3-4 years. 17.0-/20 Apr 2016 RRP $25.00
