Smith & Sheth CRU Heretaunga Chardonnay 2019, Hawke’s Bay

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 19-Feb-2021
Bright, light straw-yellow with some depth and a gold hue, faintly lighter edged. The nose is softly full and persistent, a focused stream of hazelnut, along with barrel flint underlined stonefruit, citrus and buttery popcorn. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly presented; rounded and creamy, filled with aromas of peach and grapefruit zest embellished with sweet vanilla, subtle hazelnut, and barrel seasoning. A seamless wave of acidity persists with fine-textured phenolic thread, delicate and elegant. Oak elements are integrated and polished, added structure and complexity. This is an immensely pleasing Chardonnay with elegant oak details and persistence; ready to drink now to the next 5 years, match with scampi and cheese souffle. Old vines from Gimblett Gravels and Howell's Vineyard in Bridge Pa, handpicked, whole bunch pressed, fermented and aged in French oak for 9 months, 13.5% alc. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) Feb 2021 RRP $40
