Moderately dark ruby-red colour, lighter on the rim with purple hues. The nose is firmly concentrated with a core of ripe, dark-red berry and black cherry fruit, entwined with layers of dark herbs and whole bunch stalk notes, unfolding dark plum, nutty oak and earthy elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full and flavoursome showing dark-red berry fruit, cherries, savoury plums and layers of dark herbs and stalk elements. Earthy and nutty oak add to the interest. The mouthfeel is fulsome and robust with grainy grip and tannin structure, with enlivening, fresh acidity in support. The fruit sweetness and extraction are balanced and the flavours carry to a fulsome finish of dark-red fruits and herbs. This is a full and robust, dark-red fruited Pinot Noir with complexing savoury herb and whole cluster notes and plenty of grip and structure. Match with herb-marinated game meat dishes over the next 6+ years. Clone 115 fruit from the ‘Springstone’ vineyard, Mangatahi, fermented with 15% whole bunches to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 4 weeks on skins post ferment and aged 9 month in 5% new French oak barriques, blended and given another 4 months in seasoned oak. 18.0-/20 Aug 2016 RRP $34.99
