Sileni Estates ‘Cut Cane’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 03-Jul-2016
A limited bottling of Merlot, stylistically different to the ‘Triangle’ Merlot. Fruit from the Bridge Pa Triangle, the yields from vines with one bunch per shoot, the canes cut in order for the fruit to shrivel. Fermented to 15.5% alc. and 3.66 g/L RS, the wine spending 5 weeks on skins and aged 15 months in 75% French and 25% American oak, of which 40% was new. Very dark, black-hued ruby-red colour with slight purple hues. This has a firm, intense and deeply concentrated nose of ripe blackberry and black plum aromas along with boysenberry and blue fruit notes, unfolding liquorice and spices, then violet perfumes. Full-bodied, the palate features rich and bold flavours of very ripe black plum and black berried fruits, entwined with boysenberry, liquorice, dark chocolate and Asian sauce notes. The wine has weight and presence, with noticeable alcohol generosity and drive underlining the fruit. Fine, grainy tannins provide good structure, and soft, ripe, integrated acidity lends some lift to the fruit aromatics. The wine carries with power to a strong, bold and robust finish showing sweet, ripe black fruits. This is a fulsome, sweetly rich and ripe, black and blue fruited Merlot with alcohol power and drive and a balanced grainy structure. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 7-8 years. 130 dozen made. 18.5/20 Jun 2016 RRP $39.99
