Sherwood Estate ‘Waipara Collection’ ‘R.D. 1’ Waipara Valley Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 19-Feb-2014
Fruit from the ‘Terrace’ vineyard given a cold soak and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 21 months in French oak barriques. Very dark, deep ruby-red colour, a little lighter on rim. The bouquet features tightly concentrated and densely packed aromas of ripe black berry fruits with dark earth and minerally notes, gradually unfolding layers of black pepper, spices, nutty oak and floral nuances in the glass. Medium-full bodied, brooding black fruits are interwoven with black minerals and earth. This has good body, depth and presence, with fine, grainy tannin textures and good acid linearity and drive. The concentration is the feature, promising to reveal more complexity and nuance, and this carries the flavours to a sustained, lively and crisp finish. This is a fine, tight and deeply brooding Syrah with ripe black fruits and earthy mineral notes. Match with slow-cooked game meats and hard cheeses over the next 5-7 years. 18.0+/20 Feb 2014 RRP $29.95
