Selaks ‘The Taste Collection’ ‘Silky Smooth’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2016

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-May-2018
Full, very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is soft and initially restrained in expression, but unfolds to reveal harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe black berried and dark-red plum fruit along with a very delicate thread of fresh herbs, revealing sweet and spicy, cedary oak. The aromatics grow in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rich and juicy core of ripe black berried and plummy fruits melded with a layering of spicy and cedary oak, and suggestions of dark herbs. The fruit is rich and has good presence, and is underlined by grainy tannin extraction and soft acidity. The mouthfeel has good grip and the fruit carries with good drive to a long, lingering finish of spiced plums. This is a rich, ripe, black-fruited Merlot with cedary oak and good tannin grip. Match with barbecued and grilled red meats over the next 5-6 years. Hawke’s Bay fruit fermented to 13.5% alc. and 1.3 g/L RS, the wine on skins for 18 days fermentation and aged 18 months in French and American oak. 17.5+/20 May 2018 RRP $21.99
