79% Zinfandel, 17% Petite Sirah, 2% Barbera and 2% Syrah from Dry Creek, Alexandre Valley and the Russian River Valley, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.6% alc, the wine aged 12 months in new and seasoned Hungarian oak. Full, even, darkish ruby-red colour with blach hues. The bouquet is lifted with sweetly ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit aromas laced by penetrating spicy and cedary oak, unfolding layers of vanilla, fragrant plums and liquorice. Full-bodied with elegant proportions, rich, sweet and opulent flavours of boysenberries, blueberries and black fruits are up-front and saturate the palate. The volatile and high oak content adds to the decadence of the mouthfeel. Firm, fine-grained tannins and acidity underline the fruit, becoming prominent, providing balance to the sweet fruit, leading to a dry finish with fading flavours. This is a sweet, lifted, opulent Zinfandel with plenty of oaking and firmness of structure. Match roasts and game meat over the next 4-5+ years. 11,500 cases made. 17.5/20 Sep 2013 RRP $20.99
