Saint Clair ‘Pioneer Block 12 – Lone Gum’ Marlborough Gewurztraminer 2008

Gewurztraminer from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 14-Feb-2011
Brilliant pale yellow with golden hues in colour, this has a rich, oily-smelling nose of spices, savoury florals and a touch of the ‘hair-oil' development character showing on bouquet. Soft and almost unctuous on palate, this shows a touch of alcoholic heat, though only 13.0% alc, and a lush, gentle sweetness from the 13.8 g/L rs. Honey and pungent flavours add interest, but the wine has become inward looking and a little reserved as it shows its bottle-aged nature. A hair-oil element, touch of earth and bitterness now coming to the fore. This is exchanging its youthful prettiness for complexity. Drinking well now and over the next year. Fruit from the Lone Gum vineyard in the Dog Point region, cool stainless-steel fermented. 17.5+/20 Nov 2010 RRP $21.50
