Saint Clair Origin Merlot 2020, Hawkes Bay

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Apr-2021
Deep, even ruby-purple with depth, lighter purple on the rim. The nose is full and rich, aromas of plums, ripe blackberries melded with medicinal and minty herbs, underlying barrel spices. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with concentrated aromas of plums and blackberries, subtle medicinal herbs and liquorice added complexity. Fine-grained, robust tannin contributed to the body, carry the concentrate fruit and spice to a mouth-filling finish. The wine possesses ripe fruit and concentration. Match with red wine braised beef cheek and ribeye over the next 3-4 years. Fruit sourced from Gimblett Gravels, destemmed into stainless steel tanks cold-soaked for 5 days, fermented to 13% alc. Aged on light lees in tanks and seasoned French oak. 18-/20 pts (90 pts) Apr 2021 RRP $24.90
