Saint Clair Marlborough Merlot 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 19-May-2011
Deep hearted dark ruby-red in colour, this has a softly full, but quiet bouquet of dark berry and plum fruits along with nuances of dark dried herbs, olives, cedar and spices, all well-integrated and in harmony. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of dark berries and plums meld with savoury herbs and spicy oak, and the wine flows seamlessly across the palate, the tannin extraction soft and moderate, and the acidity restrained. The cooler herbaceous spectrum notes are beautifully handled and merge into the whole. A rather shy wine in expression, the balance is exemplary. Drink over the next 3-5 years with Mediterranean-styled red meat dishes and semi-firm cheeses. Made from fruit from the Wairau Plains, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc. The wine was aged 10 months in new and seasoned American oak barrels. 16.5+/20 May 2011 RRP $21.50
