Rod McDonald ‘Mister’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2015

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 30-Apr-2017
Dark, deep, black-red colour with purple hues at the heart, lighter on the rim and youthful in appearance. The nose is fresh, fragrant and elegantly presented with aromas of blackberries and raspberries, along with dark-red florals and white pepper notes, revealing some black, earthy suggestions at the core. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with a moderately intense and concentrated heart of blackberry and dark-red berry fruits, entwined with red florals, spices and white pepper. The fruit is supported by fine, grainy-textured tannin extraction which forms a firm line. The mouthfeel has plenty of energy with fresh, lacy acidity lending tension. The wine carries to an elegant, lingering, spicy and peppery finish. This is an elegantly concentrated Syrah with good depth of blackberry and spicy raspberry fruit along with floral and white pepper notes on a firm-textured, but lively palate. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4 years. Fruit from Bridge Pa fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in 35% new French oak barriques. 17.5-/20 May 2017 RRP $24.99
