Ridgeback ‘Alex’ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2013

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 31-Mar-2014
Full, dark ruby-red colour with some youthful purple hues, lighter on rim. The nose is tight and elegant in presentation with steely black cherry and raspberry fruit aromas, alongside some sulphide reduction notes that dumb the bouquet a little, but revealing hints of liquorice dried herbs and tobacco nuances with aeration. Medium-bodied and elegant in proportion, restrained flavours of red berry fruits unfold to show sweetness and succulence. The mouthfeel is supple and refreshing, and flavours of spices, liquorice and herbs emerge. The fruit is supported by fine, dry tannins that carry the core of reed fruits to a smooth, vinous finish. A little subdued by reduction, this Pinot Noir has a sweet core of red berry fruits and fine, dry tannins. Match with Mediterranean fare over the next 4-5 years. Predominantly Abel and clone 5 from the ‘Greylands Ridge’ vineyard, hand-picked, destemmed and fermented to 13.4% alc., the wine spending 15 days on average on skins, the wine aged 10 months in 20% new French oak. 17.5-/20 Apr 2014 RRP $25.00
