Redmetal Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Franc 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 22-May-2013
Deepish, dark ruby-red colour with good heart, light purple hues on rim. The nose is even and elegant in proportion with fresh aromas of redcurrants and a suggestion of blackcurrant leaf. Nuances of red plums, oak, dark herbs and liquorice are integral and in support. Medium-light bodied, the flavours of redcurrants and red liquorice are in the cooler spectrum with an underlay of dark plums and dark herb notes. The palate has a good, tight core for its elegant size, but is supple and approachable, with gently drying tannins and lacy, mouthwatering acidity carrying the flavours to a moderately sustained finish. This is a light, fresh Merlot-based wine with accessibility and a soft, dry palate. Match with pasta, pizza, barbecued food and Mediterranean fare over the next 3-4 years. Approximately 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Redmetal’ vineyard, one-third from vines 22 y.o. and the remainder from 13 and 14 y.o. vines, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 2 weeks on skins and aged in 85% French and 15% American oak, 5% new. 16.5/20 May 2013 RRP $17.00
