Redmetal ‘Basket Press’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/CabernetFranc 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 06-Nov-2011
A blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, approximately 70% ‘Redmetal Vineyards' and 30% ‘Erinview' sourced, fermented to 13.0% alc. The wine was aged 14 months in 30% new oak, 85% French and 15% American. Dark ruby-red with purple hues, lighter on rim. This has a deep bouquet of ripe, dark plum and berry fruit aromas along with notes of red liquorice, redcurrants at the core. Oaking is balanced and well-integrated. Medium-full bodied, the palate has softly rich and lusciously ripe flavours of dark red plums and berry fruits lifted by spicy, sweet oak vanilla elements. Significant extraction provides concentration and depth, the tannins fine and grainy, but the mouthfilling fruit features, along with balanced acidity for energy. The wine finishes with sustained flavours of liquorice and spicy oak. A plummy, spicy, rich and pleasing wine to match slow-cooked lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8+ years. 18.5-/20 Nov 2011 RRP $29.95
