Redmetal ‘Basket Press’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Franc 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 17-Sep-2014
98% Merlot and 2 % Cabernet Franc fermented to 14.0% alc, with hand-plunging and pump-over, the wine aged 14 months in oak, 85% French and 15% American, with 25% new. Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full, densely packed, harmoniously presented nose of ripe dark plum and red berry fruits, lifted by aromatic and spicy oak. Cedar and spice elements unfold in waves, and nuances of black fruits with iron-earth add complexing layers. Medium-full bodied, rich, plush and succulently sweet fruit flavours of ripe dark red plums are entwined with exotic spices and sweet, cedary oak. Liquorice and black fruit elements add detail and interest. The palate features a plenty of extract, with fine-grained tannins balancing the fruit richness and the wine flows to a very long, lingering dry finish with layers of spice and sweet oak. This is a plush, well-structured, red plum fruited Merlot-based wine with layers of spice and cedary flavours. Serve with Middle Easter cuisine, and slow-cooled lamb and game meat over the next 6-8+ years. 18.5/20 Sep 2014 RRP $30.00
