Quarter Acre Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 24-May-2015
A field blend of approx. 80% Merlot, 15% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc from the organic ‘Havelock North’ vineyard, co-fermented by indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 50% new French oak barriques. Very full, dark, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthfully purple edge. This has a softly packed nose of ripe dark plums intermixed with savoury herb, earth and game-like aromas, unfolding lifted spices in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate features sweetly ripe, lusciously juicy black plum fruit flavours complexed by layers of earth, dried herbs and game. The fruit is lifted by savoury red florals and nutty oak. This has a fulsome mouthfeel with firm tannin extraction and plenty of grip, the acidity lending a lively underlying flow. The wine carries to a long, textured, robust and lingering finish. This is a full, solid Merlot and Malbec blend with ripe, dark plummy fruit and savoury earthy layers. Serve with casseroles and slow cooked game meat dishes over the next 7-9 years. 17.5+/20 May 2015 RRP $34.99
