Pyramid Valley “Orange” 2020, North Canterbury

Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 26-Feb-2021
Unfiltered, very slightly hazy with light burnt-orange colour, even colour throughout. The nose is gentle, softly penetrating nuances of wildflowers, pear, stonefruit and citrus zest, along with a hint of honey sweetness and medicinal herbs. Medium-full bodied, complex aromas of orange zest, pear, nectarine, lychee all melded together, along with wildflowers, zesty spice and pith; a subtle touch of honey linger to a long, calming finish. The wine has a complex range of fruit characters tamed by a savoury edge and chewy fine-textured phenolic; pretty floral and orange zest adorns its complexity. Acidity is balanced and seamless. This is a flavorful on-skins white blend with a complex range of ripe fruit, wildflowers and zesty details on a fine-chewy tannin palate. A versatile food match from seafood to lean and cured meat, drink now to 2025. A blend of predominantly Pinot Gris (86%) with slithers of Muscat, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, skin contact (1-3 weeks), amphorae and barrel-fermented to 12.5% alc. Unfined, unfiltered with minimal sulphur. Vegan friendly. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) Feb 2021 RRP $35
