Pyramid Valley Field Of Fire Chardonnay 2020, North Canterbury

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 17-Apr-2023
Bright, pale straw yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is gentle and precise with aromas of apricot, greengage, wildflowers, acacia and flint. Medium-bodied, aromas of greengage and apricot intertwined with grapefruit, followed by smoky flint, hazelnut, acacia, wildflowers and a yeasty mealiness. The mouthfeel is chalky, drives with precision and has a fine line of zing. The smoky, nutty, yeasty layers add complexity and interest, carrying an engaging, lifted finish. This Chardonnay is complex and stimulating, driven by precision and a chalky mineral line. Match with scallop carpaccio and Galician-style octopus over the next 6-8 years. Foot stomped, whole bunch pressed, fermented with vineyard yeast to 14.2% alc, aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, then further aged 6 months in stainless steel on light lees. Unfined, unfiltered. Biodynamic certified. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) Apr 2023 RRP $125
