Pol Roger Champagne ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ 1999

Sparkling Wine from France - Champagne
Review Date : 29-Nov-2011
The blend of ‘Sir Winston Churchill' has never been revealed apart from it being a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, "made in a style that would please Sir Winston Churchill”. It is released after 10 years of aging. Bright straw-yellow colour with persistent bead. The bouquet is one of great intensity, simultaneously combining concentrated, complex aromas of bright, rich yellow stonefruits with intense bready, yeast-extract and toast. This has finesse of style with secondary interest. Dry to taste, the palate has a tightness and concentrated core, just beginning to release sweetly nuanced yellow stonefruit Pinot Noir fruit. The wine is poised between tight austerity and lush opulence, and has complex nuances of autolysis and toasty development interwoven as underlying interest. This may be an earlier maturing release, say over the next 5-7 years. 19.0/20 Nov 2011
