Pio Cesare Barbera d’Alba DOC 2011

Barbera from Italy - Piedmont
Review Date : 10-Apr-2014
100% Barbera from estate vineyards in Serralunga, Sinio, Diano and Grinzane Cavour, and contracted fruit, given 15 days skin contact and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in French oak30% barriques, the remainder in larger casks. Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on rim. The bouquet is firmly packed with bright, ripe aromas of savoury black and red berry fruits unfolding layers of game, iron-earth, and a milky, cedary amalgam. Medium-bodied, tightly bound and intense flavours of dark red berry fruits show with sweetness, milk chocolate elements, and lifted spice and cedar notes. The palate features a very fine, but firm tannin core supporting the fruit, with fresh, balanced, underlying acidity. Some alcohol power emerges, and the mouthfeel becomes rounded, leading to a soft, dry finish with nuances of red fruits and spices. This is a fresh and bright Barbera d’Alba with soft, but substantial tannins. Match with risotto, pasta, poultry and pork over the next 5-6+ years. 17.5+/20 Apr 2014 RPP $34.95
