Penkridge Farm Pinot Noir 2017, Central Otago

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Central Otago & Waitaki
Review Date : 23-Apr-2021
Moderate ruby-red with some depth and good transparency, lighter edged. The nose is broody, softly penetrating aromas of roses, thyme and spices herbs interweave red cherries, semi-dried plums and forest floor. Medium-bodied, nuances of red cherries, semi-dried plums accompanied by raspberries; black pepper, cardamon enriched the palate, along with deep florals, thyme and mushrooms added complexity. The palate is clean and pure with a creamy flow; finely-extracted tannin is silky and elegant. Integrated acidity provides a lively drive to linearity. This is an elegant, pretty Pinot Noir from a cooler vintage with floral delicacy, red fruit and forest floor complexity. Match with smoked duck and pigeon over the next 5 years. Fruit from Mount Pisa, Clones 5 (25%) 777 (50%) 667 (25%). Handpicked, clones were kept separate, 5-7 days cold soak, fermented in vats to 13% alc, 5-7 post-ferment maceration, aged in French barrels for 9 months, 30% new oak. 100 cases produced. 18.5+/20 pts (93 pts) Apr 2021 RRP $40
