Penfolds ‘RWT’ Barossa Valley Shiraz 2008

Syrah from Australia - South Australia
Review Date : 13-May-2011
The search for a different expression of Shiraz to rival ‘Grange' was the basis behind Penfolds' ‘Red Winemaking Trials'. ‘RWT' is all about Barossa Valley Shiraz opulence in French oak. This is 100% Shiraz from mature sites in Kalimna, Moppa and Ebenezer on the western edge of the Barossa, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine then aged 14 months in 83% new French oak hogsheads. Saturated, impenetrable black-hued, purple-red in colour, this has a hugely concentrated bouquet of very ripe black fruits, lavender perfumes, black pepper, chocolate and mocha coffee from new oak. The fruit depth, richness and intensity is stunning. Flavours of black fruits, violet florals, black pepper, chocolate and Oriental spices all show, but are more that matched and framed by the impressive extraction and structure. This contains the fruit sweetness and shows how perfectly balanced the oaking is. This is an ‘RWT' for the cellar, matching rich beef, lamb and venison dishes over the next 20+ years. 19.0/20 May 2011 RRP $200.00
