Penfolds ‘Grange’ 2006

Syrah from Australia - South Australia
Review Date : 13-May-2011
The best wine of the southern hemisphere and one of the world's greats, ‘Grange' is the flagship for Penfolds showcasing the most flavoursome Shiraz fruit from across growing regions, the full-bodied house style of Penfolds and new American oak hogsheads. The 2006 is 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon fro the Barossa Valley and Magill, fermented to 14.5% alc., then aged 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Dense, near saturated, impenetrable black-hued ruby-red in colour, this has an incredibly complex, layered nose of black fruits, savoury game and herbs with ink, earth, lifted with a little volatility and refined oak lift. The finesse and stylishness of the nose and its oak balance seems a departure from the past. On palate, this is sensationally mouthfilling with rich back fruits, exotic spices, dark meat, herbs, liquorice, chocolate and cedary toast. The tannin structure is enormous, but unbelievably refined. The concentration allied to finesse is very special and seems to redefine how Penfolds is taking ‘Grange' into the future. This is sheer class with the unmistakable stamp of Penfolds signature. Great wine with 30-50 years ahead of it. 20.0/20 May 2011 RRP $600.00
