Pegasus Bay ‘Prima Donna’ Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 21-Oct-2014
Full, even, dark red colour with garnet hues, lighter on rim. The bouquet is softly full with complex layers of savoury dark red berry fruit with nuances of bright whole berry fermentation fragrances intermixed with game and earthy detail, and the beginnings of undergrowth and mushrooms. Piquant red floral perfumes complete the aromatic array on nose. Full-bodied with soft richness and weight, plush and sweet layers of savoury red fruits are entwined with dried herb, game and brambly detail. The flavours are lifted by red florals and a suggestion of oak toast. Smooth flowing and velvety in texture, there is considerable extraction and substance, along with underlying power. The palate is beautifully balanced and has a completeness, and carries to a sustained, nuanced finish. This is a subtly layered and complex, velvety Pinot Noir with a completeness in expression. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 6-8+ years. Multi-clone fruit from ungrafted vines up to 30 y.o., destemmed, given an ambient soak and indigenous yeast fermented with a portion of whole berries to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 30% new French ok barriques. 19.0/20 Oct 2014 RRP $85.00
