Pegasus Bay ‘Maestro’ Waipara Valley Merlot/Malbec 2009

Merlot from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 02-Oct-2013
A barrel selection. 45% Merlot, 45% Malbec and 5% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, from vines, some over 25 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in French oak barriques. Very full, black-hued ruby-red, near impenetrable, with lighter purple edge. This has a very tightly concentrated and dense, brooding nose packed with dark berry and plum aromas, unfolding layers of earth, dried herb, tobacco and cedar. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a rounded, but firm and solid core of sweetly ripe dark berry and plum fruit flavours, harmoniously melded with earth, liquorice, leather and oak cedar. The flavours are supported by extremely fine-grained tannin extraction. This has great presence and underlying energy that is carried to a very long and sustained finish that blossoms with spicy, succulent liquorice and earthy notes. This is a densely concentrated, harmoniously rich and fine-textured Merlot and Malbec blend to serve with casseroles and slow-cooked meats over the next 7-9+ years. 18.5-/20 Oct 2013 RRP $46.95
