Pegasus Bay ‘Bel Canto’ Waipara Dry Riesling 2011

Riesling from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 23-May-2013
Bright, even, light straw-yellow with slight golden hues, paler on rim. This has a firmly packed nose, showing some restraint in expression. Aromas of yellow stonefruits, citrus, florals and honey are entwined with mineral and flinty elements. Off-dry to taste, the palate features a complex array of flavours, with ripe citrus and exotic tropical fruits, minerals and complexing flinty elements forming a weighty core. This is bright, lush and juicy, opening waves of flavour. There is real underlying power, with a fine textural thread providing backbone. The mouthfeel is soft, the acidity discreet, but the flavours have the energy and drive to carry through to a very long, rich, generous finish. This is a complex, off-dry Riesling with the weight and richness to match Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine over the next 4-5 years. Waipara fruit with around 30% botrytis infection, cool-fermented with around 20-25% by indigenous yeasts in old large oak barrels to 14.0% alc. and 9 g/L rs. 18.5+/20 May 2013 RRP $31.95 Bright, light golden-straw colour. The nose is full with bright and complex aromas of ripe citrus and apricotty fruit, classical Waipara jasmine and tangerine notes, along with botrytis and flinty lees/reductive layes. This smells fulsome and opulent. Dryish to taste, and fullish-bodied, this is lively and tingling, with plenty of richness, depth and breadth on the palate. The weight and extract is impressive, and there is power allied to a fine textural grip and line. This has great presence and drive, and the flavours flow to a firm, dry finish with intermixed bitter citrus, mineral and honey notes. Made from fruit with 30% botrytis infection, 20-25% fermented in old oak with some solids to 14.0% alc. and 9 g/L rs. 18.5+/20 Feb 2013
