Obsidian ‘Young Vine’ Waiheke Island Tempranillo 2010

Tempranillo from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 14-Sep-2011
The first crop of Tempranillo from 3 y.o. vines on ‘Block 1', destemmed and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged for 10 months in 1 y.o. American oak and blended with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very full, dark, deep ruby-red with purple hues to the colour. This has a deep, vibrant and sweetly ripe red berry bouquet with savoury plum notes, well-infused with sweet American oak vanilla-like aromas. Full-bodied, this is lush and juicy, the sweet and savoury red berry and plum flavours harmoniously interwoven with the American oak. The wine has fresh, lively acidity and prominent grainy tannins that result in a solid, structured texture and grip. Fruit and oak sweetness somewhat alleviate the robustness. A flavoursome and fully textured with Spanish oaking style to serve with hearty Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5-7+ years. 26 dozen made. 18.0-/20 Sep 2011 RRP $35.20
