Obsidian Waiheke Island Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 30-Nov-2015
Full, dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with purple hues. The nose is very full and broad with densely packed aromas of ripe black-berried fruit aromas, dark plums and subtle layers of black pepper, liquorice, soft clove spices, all harmoniously melded with a line of earth and savoury whole cluster herbal elements. Medium-full bodied, soft, mouthfilling and well-concentrated flavours of sweetly ripe black-berried fruits, spicy plums, liquorice are complexed by subtle earth and herb detail. The mouthfeel is soft and rounded, the density and concentration enhanced by soft acidity. The tannins are supple, but plentiful, lending structure, carrying the wine to a softly concentrated finish. This is a fulsome, densely packed ripe Syrah with dark plum, earth, spice and herb flavours and a significant framework. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 5-6+ years. Fruit from the ‘Obsidian’ vineyard, fermented with 10% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 20% new French oak. 485 dozen made. 18.0-/20 Dec 2015 RRP $35.00
