Obsidian Waiheke Island Montepulciano 2013

Montepulciano from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 11-Aug-2014
Very full, near saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is powerful and concentrated with complex and intriguing aromas of raspberries, red and blackcurrants, entwined with vegetal and herbal nuances, the aromatics growing in opulence and volume with aeration. Medium-full bodied, rich and luscious flavours of ripe dark raspberries intermingle with vegetal and herb flavours. The fruit is succulently sweet and balanced by soft, granular tannins, the extraction quite substantial but the mouthfeel is rounded. Good acidity underlines the palate, and the wine carries through to a fulsome, dry and fine-textured finish with freshness and liveliness. This is a lush and rich, individually flavoured Montepulciano, with grainy extract and fresh acid line. Match with herb-marinated lamb, and with hard cheeses over the next 5-7 years. 100% Montepulciano, fermented to 14.4% alc., the wine aged 10 months in seasoned oak, of which 40% was 1 y.o. French, the remainder older French and American. 18.0/20 Aug 2014 RRP $35.00
