Obsidian Waiheke Island Cabernet/Merlot 2009

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 28-Jul-2013
45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec from the ‘Obsidian’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques. Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with garnet hues on rim. The bouquet is full and dense with aromas of dark red berry fruits and savoury plums, game and earthy notes showing secondary development. Notes of tar and bramble unfold. Medium-full bodied, this has gently mouthfilling flavours of savoury red fruits, earth, game, bramble and brown spices. The palate has weight and depth and rounded, grainy tannins supporting the fruit, with balanced acidity present. This has good energy carrying the secondary game and savoury fruit flavours to a moderately sustained, softly textured finish. This is a savoury flavoured Cabernet/Merlot blend showing secondary development, with the structure and energy to keep another 4-5+ years. Serve with casseroles and cheeses. 803 cases made. 17.5/20 Jul 2013 RRP $26.50
