Obsidian ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Viognier 2013

Viognier from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 11-Aug-2014
Fruit from the ‘North Face’ of the Obsidian vineyard cropped at 0.6 kg/vine, WBP and fully barrel-fermented with indigenous yeasts to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 6 months in seasoned French oak barriques on lees, without MLF. Brilliant, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is very elegant and tightly bound with fresh and refined aromas of white florals and stonefruits, and apricots infused with minerals, unfolding delicate, complexing nuances of oxidative nutty elements. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, this has a sleek and concentrated, smooth-flowing core of exotic florals and white stonefruits, along with apricots, ginger and nuances of nuts. The palate has some phenolic textures and is driven by positive alcoholic power. The mouthfeel is slippery and brisk, with a racy linearity that carries the wine to a very long, lingering finish with florals, ginger and spices. This is an elegantly concentrated and sleek Viognier with alcoholic drive a slippery flow and racy acidity. Match with seafood and fine Asian fare over the next 4+ years. 18.5/20 Aug 2014 RRP $45.00
