Obsidian ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 11-Aug-2014
Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues. The nose is very elegant and stylishly presented with aromas of white stonefruits entwined with mealy, nutty notes, and a refined mineral and flinty layer that subtly unfolds with aeration. Fullish bodied and elegant in proportion, pure white stonefruit and nutty flavours show with suggestions of sweetness and succulence. The palate has power and linear drive, revealing stylish, spicy oak and complexing minerally notes. The mouthfeel is wonderfully vibrant with fine acid freshness and cut, and underlined by fine, smooth textures, leading to a very long, lingering finish with delicate citrus fruit and toast oak elements. This is a stylish, delicately nuanced, fresh and lively Chardonnay with complex mineral and stonefruit flavours, in the Puligny-Montrachet mould. Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 5-6+ years. Cropped at 1.5 kg/vine, WBP and fully barrel-fermented with indigenous yeasts to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 40% new French oak, the wine given a little early batonnage and no MLF. 19.0-/20 Aug 2014 RRP $42.00
