Obsidian ‘Reserve’ ‘The Mayor’ Waiheke Island 2016

Blended Red from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 11-Apr-2018
Full, dark, deep black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with slight purple hues. The nose is well-proportioned and finely presented with deep and softly packed aromas of fragrant blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with harmoniously entwined notes of dark herbs, nutty oak and suggestions of iron-earth minerals, tar, smoke and toast. Medium-bodied, the palate has moderately concentrated and deep flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants along with aromatic dark herbs, with nutty and toasty oak. The fruit has sweetness and richness, and is balanced by fresh, lacy acidity, and underlined by fine-grained, flowery tannin structure and grip. The wine has plenty of linearity and drive, and the extraction carries the fruit to a lingering, aromatic finish. This is an elegantly proportioned Cabernet Franc-blend with flavours of blackcurrants, blackberries and fragrant herbs on a fresh, finely extracted palate. Match with roasted lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-7 years. A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 33% Petit Verdot and 17% Malbec, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 33% new French and 17% new American oak barrels, the remainder in seasoned oak. 18.5/20 Apr 2018 RRP $54.00
