Ngatarawa ‘Alwyn’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2009

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-Jul-2014
A warm and dry growing season. Clone 15 fruit fully barrel-fermented, 40% cool, 40% wild and 20% hot, to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new French oak barriques with batonnage, but no MLF. Full, even, light green-golden yellow colour with some depth, lighter on rim. This has an elegant and tightly bound nose, somewhat undeveloped with fresh green and white stonefruit aromas, white florals and waxy lees elements. Aromas of almonds and hazelnuts emerge and grow in penetration and intensity, the bouquet reminiscent of white burgundy. Elegantly proportioned on palate, this is softly concentrated with flavours of waxy, green and yellow stonefruits and tightly bound nutty notes. The fruit has a subtle sweetness and richness, and integrated acidity. There is considerable alcoholic drive and linearity, and the palate flows smoothly with well-handle phenolic textures harmoniously integral with the fruit. The wine has a very long, elegant finish. This is an elegant, but powerfully lined Chardonnay with waxy, nutty flavours. It will develop over the next 4+ years. 18.0+/20  Jul 2014 RRP $N/A Brilliant light straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, this has a soft, full and broad nose of citrus and tropical fruits harmoniously interwoven with spicy, nutty oak aromas. Medium full-bodied, this is soft and open with layers of ripe citrus and tropical fruits and mealy, spicy oak nuttiness that unfold in the glass. Lovely creamy barrel-ferment textures are a highlight, but the wine has good acid balance and freshness. All clone 15 Chardonnay from two Bridge Pa Triangle sites, 100% barrel-fermented, 40% with natural yeasts, to 13.0% alc, the wine aged in 30% new French oak barriques, with no MLF. Match with firm flesh seafood, pork and veal over the next 5-6 years. 18.0/20 Jun 2011 RRP $34.00
