Murdoch James ‘Blue Rock Single Vineyard’ Martinborough Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 25-Sep-2012
Syrah fruit from the lime and clay soiled ‘Highfold' hillside block from 12 y.o. vines, fermented partially with indigenous yeasts to 12.5% alc., the wine spending over one month on skins and aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. Dark ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has an elegant and attractively soft nose of dark berry fruits, spicy plums, black pepper and liquorice along with graphite and earthy notes. Medium-bodied, softly succulent dark plum flavours are lifted by fragrant savoury floral elements and pepper. The extraction is restrained, and the mouthfeel supple and smooth. Good acid tension provides good liveliness and carries the flavours through to a well-concentrated and long finish with sweet fruit and chocolate-like nuances. This is a medium-bodied sweet fruited and supple Syrah featuring excellent length. Match with Asian poultry and pork dishes over the next 5-6 years. 18.0-/20 Sep 2012 RRP $39.00
