Mudbrick ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 15-Jun-2015
Very full, near impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is tightly concentrated with deep and intense aromas of ripe black berried fruits entwined with subtle black pepper, spices and dark herbal elements. The aromatics are elegantly lifted by fragrant violet and black floral nuances, unveiling delicate mineral and white pepper suggestions. Medium-full bodied and elegantly proportioned, the palate has tightly bound, but succulently rich fruit flavours of black berries, black pepper and violet florals. The fruit is lively and vibrant, quite youthful and primary, with discreet acidity enhancing the freshness. Fine-grained, flowery tannins provide satiny textures and supporting structure, with a little alcohol power adding to the drive. The wine leads to a very long and sustained, lively black-fruited, peppery finish. This is a tightly bound, succulently rich and lively black-fruited Syrah with elegant and refined tannins. Match with lamb and beef, and Asian or Middle Eastern fare over the next 7-9+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Mudbrick’ and ‘Shepherds Point’ vineyards, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 35% new French oak. 302 cases made. 18.5+/20 Jun 2015 RRP $60.00
