Mt Difficulty ‘Growers Series’ ‘Packspur Vineyard’ Lowburn Valley Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 25-Jul-2014
Clones 5, 6, 115 and Lincoln Mix from the 3 ha ‘Packspur’ vineyard from vines planted in 1993, the fruit 75% destemmed and 25% retained as whole clusters, given a cold soak, and all clones indigenous yeast fermented together to 13.3% alc., the wine spending 27 days on skins and aged 16 months in barrel. Moderately dark ruby-red with a little garnet, lighter on rim. This has a full, well-packed nose, deep and brooding, showing aromas of savoury red berry fruits with complexing brown spices, earth, undergrowth and whole bunch elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fulsome with layers of savoury red berry fruits entwined with spices, earth, mushrooms, dried herbs and game. The flavours are framed by positive tannin structure and the mouthfeel is balanced with lacy underlying acidity enhancing the sweetness and richness of the fruit. As the wine flows, the flavours blossom to reveal waves of complexing whole bunch detail, with good textured grip carrying the wine to a long, sustained finish. This is a complex flavoured, savoury and fulsome Pinot Noir with plenty of structure. Match with wild duck or pork, and with casseroles over the next 6-7+ years. 18.5/20 Jul 2014 RRP $69.95
