Mount Edward Central Otago Gruner Veltliner 2011

Gruner Veltliner from New Zealand - Otago
Review Date : 07-Feb-2013
First crop fruit from the ‘Morrison' vineyard, Lowburn, from 5 y.o. vines, WBP with no SO2 and indigenous yeast fermented with full solids in stainless-steel barrels to 14.1% alc. and 9.1 g/L rs, the wine given 8 months lees contact. Certified organic. Bright, very pale straw colour with some green hues. The nose is bold and firm with fresh, brash and lifted aromas of savoury minerals, smoke and yellow stonefruits with nutty lees and spicy cinnamon-like elements. The fruit is behind the winemaker input. Dryish to taste, rich and savoury flavours of lifted herbal and apple-like fruit intermingle with minerals, spices, nuts and flint. This is juicy from bright, racy acidity and some sweetness apparent on palate. Fine-grained textures provide a good palate line. This is a vibrant, racy, bold wine with plenty of palate interest and winemaker artefact playing a significant role. 17.5/20 Feb 2013
