Mon Cheval Le Char Pinot Noir 2019, North Canterbury

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 29-Oct-2021
Moderately full, dark ruby-red, lighter edged. The nose is full and enticing, with harmonious aromas of dark plums, cherries entwined with liquorice, minty herbs, spice and sweet fragrance. Medium-full bodied, richness fills the palate, showing aromas of dark plums, cherries melded with dark earth, clove, cinnamon, black pepper; unfolding savoury, liquorice and thyme. The mouthfeel is broad with the weight of rich earth and concentrated fruit; spices leave a prickling sensation on the palate. Fine-grained tannin extraction extends a dense palate with velvet, along with lacy acidity, lingers to a long, powerful finish. This is a rich and harmonious Pinot Noir with dark fruit, spice and earth, showing a sense of place with power and grace. Match with five-spice duck and braised wild boar shanks over the next 10 years. Handpicked, 60% clone 667 and 40% clone 115, fermented to 13.7% alc, aged in barrels for 18 months approx, 50% new oak. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) Oct 2021 RRP $70
