Mission ‘Vineyard Selection’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-May-2016
Dark, deep, black-red colour with youthful purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly concentrated with deep aromas of dark red earthy plums and red berry fruits entwined with dark, piquant herbs, along with hints of camphor, nutty oak and minty chocolate. Medium-full bodied, the palate features sweetly ripe dark red and black berry and plum fruit entwined with subtle layers of blackcurrants, cassis and herbs. The fruit forms a densely packed heart supported by soft, grainy tannin extraction and structure, with soft acidity lending a degree of roundness to the mouthfeel. The black fruits and choc-mint flavours carry to a light, lingering finish of plums, currants and herbs. This is a sweet, dark berry and plum fruited Merlot with chocolate and mint notes and a grainy structure. Match with roasted lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 5-6 years. Merlot fruit from the Mere Road vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.2% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 18% new French oak barrels. 17.0+/20 May 2016 RRP $20.00
