Mission ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2014

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 02-Feb-2017
Even, moderately dark ruby-red colour with slight garnet hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with tightly bound, but intense aromas of ripe and vibrant dark-red and blackberries, plums, and a layer of spicy oak and an amalgam of redcurrants, dark herbs and iron-earth minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-concentrated with richly sweet and vibrant dark-red berry and plum fruit flavours, along with redcurrants, spicy oak and nuances of herbs and minerals. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction and structure, and enlivened by fresh acidity. The wine follows a fine, firm line with good vitality, leading to a long and sustained vanish of blackberries and plums, cedary oak and spices. This is a finely concentrated and structured vibrant Merlot with sweetly ripe berry and plum fruit enhanced by cedary oak and mineral notes. Match with grilled and roasted red meats and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-9 years. Fruit from the Mere Road vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to14.2% alc., the wine aged 12 months in French oak. 18.5/20 Feb 2017 RRP $29.00
