Mission ‘Jewelstone’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 21-Aug-2015
Very dark, near impenetrable black-hued purple red, lighter on the rim. This has an elegantly penetrating, ethereal nose that blooms in volume, revealing vibrant, primary fruit aromas of blackberries lifted by piquant black and violet florals, interwoven with complexing layers of black pepper, spices and earthy minerals, a hint of oak char and reductive suggestions. The aromatic detail is expressed with finesse. Medium-full bodied, rich and lusciously sweet, ripe blackberry fruit flavours are melded with black pepper and violet florals, and unfold earth and minerally nuances. The fruit is bright and aromatic, and underlined by very fine-grained, flowery tannins and fresh, balancing acidity. This has a refined, concentrated core and line, and the wine flows with energy and drive, carrying to a long, succulent finish with complex tar and floral nuances. This is an elegant and refined, concentrated Syrah with aromatic black fruit and palate vitality. Match with roast lamb, beef and venison, and hard cheeses over the next 8-10+ years. Fruit selected from the certified organic area of the 2 ha Syrah block from the company’s Mere Road vineyard, from 10 y.o. vines, fermented with a portion of whole berries to 13.9% alc., the wine spending 14 days on skins post ferment and aged 12 months in 23% new French oak. 6,800 bottles made. 19.0/20 Aug 2015 RRP $49.99
